So I had a brush with fame this past weekend:
I met Russell Westbrook! (and by met I mean I saw him from afar and took a bunch of pictures like a fanboy). I was walking in downtown Charlotte after leaving lunch with some of my fraternity brothers when I had my brush with fame. Now, in hindsight, I should have known there was something important happening that day. I mean I had several clues. We were crossing the street and walking past Bar Cocoa, a popular dessert bar connected to the Ritz Carlton (clue number 1) when we saw a crowd of people waiting outside the door in a long line (clue number 2), and there was a nondescript white bus parked in front of the door (clue number 3). It’s also worth noting that OKC was playing the Hornets later that day downtown.
I’ve never been to Bar Cocoa so I don’t know how good it is, but I just figured all those people were waiting in line for some free cookies or something. So, we breeze through the center of the line, past the front entrance and proceeded down the street. No sooner had we made it through the crowd that everyone started cheering and clapping, saying “Russell! Over here Russell!” I turn around and sure enough, Russell Westbrook himself is walking out the front door towards the white bus, stopping only to sign a few autographs along the way. Needless to say, we all scrambled to take out our phones and catch a quick snap of him for Instagram. I got my few paparazzi shots and immediately thought about how close I had just been to him.
That’s not the first time this has happened to me though. A few weeks prior to this I was volunteering at Bank of America Stadium (home of the Panthers) when I had a brush with Cam Newton. I was leaving my shift and got lost trying to find the exit. I finally found it and as I turned the corner, Cam Newton passed through walking right past me. He was dressed in his usual attire: blue double-breasted blazer, maroon pants, velvet loafers and one of his signature wide-brimmed hats so I knew he was heading to his post-game interviews. I always seem to run into the most critical people at the most unexpected times and I never know what’s going on! I have complete tunnel vision when I’m walking so

I tend to miss a lot at times. It doesn’t help that I don’t recognize half of these guys in real life either (they’re either way shorter or taller than they look on tv). But I’ve seen two of my style icons in the same city within a few weeks of each other and come close to them with each meeting.
I feel like it’s only a matter of time before I actually meet these guys one on one and get to work with them as a stylist. Things come in threes from what I’ve learned, so who’s the next famous face I’ll see, I wonder? I can’t just keep running into them for nothing, right?
